Department of Plant Diseases and Microbiology

Welcome to the Division of Plant Diseases and Microbiology

Microbiology is a science that teaches the importance of microorganisms for us and for other living things. None of us can imagine life without these marvelous microorganisms. They play important roles in the environment, human health, diverse industries, agriculture and the cycling of nutrients.

The Division consists of two professors and two assistant professors. Our research activities include Plant Diseases, Mycology, Food Microbiology, Microbial Ecology and Industrial Microbiology. We offer undergraduate, graduate and doctorate courses as follows: Microbiology, Plant Pathology, Soil Microbiology, Pharmaceutical Microbiology, Introduction to Microbial Ecology, General Mycology, Industrial Applications in Microbiology, Plant Protection, Epidemiology, Clinical Microbiology, Industrial Microorganisms, Food Microbiology, Food Preservation Methods, Mushroom Cultivation, Air Quality and Biomonitoring, Microbial Genetics, Microbial Ecology, Mycology, Microbial Genomics and Biotechnology, Bacteriology, Classic Identification Methods in Microbiology, Principles of Sterilization, Actinomycetes, Virus-Host Relationship, Virology, The Physical Environment For Fungal Growth, The Chemical Environment For Fungal Growth and Diseases of Ornamental Plants.

The Division of Plant Diseases and Microbiology includes an interactive group of faculty and graduate students. We have collaborative studies with national and international research groups in the departments of Chemistry (Faculty of Arts and Sciences, Marmara University), Electric and Electronic Engineering (Faculty of Technology, Marmara University), Environmental Engineering (Faculty of Engineering, Marmara University), Clinical Microbiology (Faculty of Medicine, Yeditepe University), Microbiology and Parasitology (Faculty of  Pharmacy, Sevilla University, Spain) and ERRC, U.S.A.

The Division of Plant Diseases and Microbiology makes an important contribution to the leather industry, especially in hide and skin microbiology. Our goal is to prepare our students for careers in microbiological research. In addition, we have implemented projects in collaboration with The Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality and other municipalities. We prepare expert technical reports about plant diseases.

Professor & Chairperson

Meral Birbir, Ph.D.

Our laboratory focuses on the microbial populations in different environments; antimicrobial agents and applications; identification of microorganisms using conventional and molecular methods; inactivation of bacteria via electric current applications; extremely halophilic archaea and moderately halophilic bacteria on salted hides and skins; microbiology of hypersaline environments; microorganisms in the leather industry.

Assistant Professor

Zeki Severoğlu, Ph.D.

Our laboratory specializes in the field of plant pathology and ecology. My research areas are the scientific study of diseases in plants caused by pathogens (infectious organisms), disease etiology, disease cycle, the economic impact of plants, environmental conditions, plant disease resistance, management of plant diseases, and ecology.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Pınar Çağlayan

We study the moderately halophilic bacteria and extremely halophilic archaea on salted hides and skins, inactivation of bacteria via electric current applications, antimicrobial applications in the leather industry and microorganisms in the leather industry. We characterize the microorganisms using conventional and molecular methods.
